Spotlight on volunteers New lawyers honored for contributions to division A public opinion poll released Aug. 9 by the ABA reveals a strong belief and trust in the American jury system and debunks the notion that Americans think jury duty is a burden to be avoided. The following Oregon New Lawyers Division members are being honored for contributions to the division’s member and public services activities in 2004. The Member Services Award honors members of the ONLD for contributions to the profession through member programs such as subcommittee work. The honoree is Jessica L. Cousineau, Tigard, for her work with the ONLD CLE subcommittee in planning the Portland Brown Bag series and the SuperSaturday CLE. The Public Service Award honors an attorney who has made a substantial contribution to the public through efforts involving pro bono services, law related education, or activities to benefit the public. Matthew A. Chancellor, Jackson County district attorney’s office, Medford, and Craig J. Capon, Harrang Long, Eugene, are both being honored for their work with the public service display booth at the Jackson County and Lane County fairs, respectively. From setting up the display booth to soliciting volunteers, to troubleshooting, both honorees contributed many hours to this effort resulting in hundreds of people receiving legal information distributed from the display booth by local volunteer lawyers. The Volunteer of the Year Award acknowledges that the success of the many ONLD programs and events occurs because of members who volunteer time and expertise. This award recognizes significant contributions to the division through volunteer activities and commitment to an ONLD program. The honoree for 2004 is Christine M. Meadows, Jordan Schrader, Portland. Christine is honored for her work as a delegate to the ABA Young Lawyers Division. She has contributed countless hours attending ABA/YLD conferences and ABA House of Delegates meetings. Fair volunteers appreciated The Oregon New Lawyers Division thanks the volunteers who gave their time and energy to staff the booths at the 2004 Jackson and Lane County fairs.
